Medicine was one of the main activities of the Žiče Carthusians. In the 12th Century the lower building housed a “hospitalus”, and since the 16th Century a public pharmacy. This is why members of Iršič family reawakened this tradition at Žiče Charterhouse. Walk around the herb garden in front of the breathtaking carthusian monastery, look for numerous medicinal substances for your health in the renovated defensive tower, taste different delicious herbal products and enjoy viewing the herb exhibition. Groups can have tastings of heavenly herbal drinks and degustation spreads arranged. Primary and secondary schools are invited to participate in learning workshops about the usage of herbs in medicine and nutrition.

On your way to the carthusian monastery, in Žiče village, just next to Kalšek wickerwork, you can stop at the picturesque and interesting Majnik herb garden, which offers a great variety of over 120 different herbs. Many years’ dreams have come true for Majda, a keen herb lover since her youth, and her hard-working family, who puts her garden on display, educates visitors, and sells herbs grown in a biodynamic way.

Alyssum Montanum, Endemic

Žički grobeljnik (Alyssum montanum var. plusccanescens Raim)

On your way to Žiče Charterhouse you have to stop at the quarry in Žiče where a rare protected endemic tiny flower grows. Do not pick it as this is a protected natural monument, which can be found only in the Žiče Quarry and its surroundings. But do take a photo of it as a souvenir.

Moreover, with two golden medals in the competition Entente Florale Europe (1998, 2014) it was placed alongside the best-kept European towns, while nearby Žiče village won the bronze medal in 1998. Charterhouse Žiče – the pearl of the cultural heritage in Slovenske Konjice municipality – also managed to place among the finalists of the European Destinations of ExcelleNce competition – EDEN 2011.
